Red alert: Sensient launches EU-friendly colour range

Sensient Food Colors Europe has launched a new range of colourings which allow bright red colours to be created in food manufacturing without the use of aluminium-containing carmine.

The Natural Red Range, particularly suited to berry or fruit-flavoured products among other applications, could provide a welcome option in the production of foodstuffs such as ice cream, which are affected by EU regulations due to come into effect. From the start of August 2014, the use of colours containing aluminium will be prohibited in certain food products within the EU.

The regulation follows on from a decision by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in 2008 to reduce the recommended lower tolerable weekly intake for aluminium 1mg/kg body weight a week.
