US-based Paediatric hospitals Children’s National and The HSC Health Care System (HSC) have secured a regulatory approval for an integration aimed at providing care for children and young adults with complex medical needs across the region.

Children’s National is a paediatric academic health system that offers care through a community-based primary care network and specialty outpatient centres across the DC Metropolitan area, including the Maryland suburbs and Northern Virginia.

The HSC Health Care System is a 135-year old non-profit health care organisation that serves individuals with complex health care needs, removing barriers to services. It aims to provide family-centred medical care, care coordination, and empowerment through advocacy and education.

Children’s National president and CEO Kurt Newman said: “We are excited to have the HSC team join the Children’s National family. Together, our experience represents 285 years of experience caring for children with the most complex medical needs.

“We know that integrating our services will help meet the changing needs of patients and their families and create a seamless care experience.”

The organisations are planning to work together on a five-year integration plan

Pursuant to the integration agreement, HSC becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary of Children’s National, which includes a paediatric hospital, outpatient therapy centre, skilled nursing facility, home health services and health plan.

In the past, both the organisations have worked in collaboration, where HSC is a health system serving children with complex health conditions, and  Children’s National provides inpatient and outpatient specialty care to patients who also receive services from HSC.

The HSC Health Care System president and CEO Nathaniel Beers said: “The patients and families we serve routinely navigate a complex system with a multitude of specialists and services required for their care.

“Together, we know we can make it easier for them to access care. Ultimately, our goal is to improve the quality of life for our patients and their families.”

The bipartisan ACE Kids Act, which was signed into law in spring 2019, underlines the importance of delivering care to children with complex medical needs gained national attention.
