US-based biopharmaceutical firm Gilead Sciences has selected Amazon Web Services (AWS), an IT services unit of Amazon, as its preferred cloud provider.

With AWS as the preferred cloud provider, the US drugmaker will benefit from AWS experts and partners in healthcare and life sciences to offer advances in machine learning and analytics.

Also, it will use AWS to host its enterprise resource planning (ERP) transformation workloads to execute SAP S/4HANA across its operations.

The collaboration will support Gilead’s data-driven decision making, from biomarker discovery to manufacturing and clinical trials, and help refine its drug pipeline, said AWS.

Gilead senior vice president and chief information officer Marc Berson said: “With AWS as our preferred cloud provider, our researchers can use AWS’s portfolio of services to gain the insights, agility, and security needed to deliver new medicines at speed, and treat the individual according to their unique needs, not just the disease.

“AWS’s performance, infrastructure, and scale are the foundations on which we will complete our ERP transformation and become a more efficient, agile, secure, and data-driven business in the cloud.”

Gilead will leverage AWS’ compute, machine learning, and database capabilities to restructure its bioinformatics compute infrastructure in cloud.

AWS’ capabilities are said to facilitate the analysis and integration of diverse genomics, imaging, and experimental datasets to improve Gilead’s diagnosis and treatments.

In addition, the biopharmaceutical firm will use AWS to host all workloads for its ERP transformation project to implement SAP S/4HANA in its IT organisation.

It is the first time, Gilead is executing its production-scale ERP systems in the cloud, and AWS is expected to provide scalable, and secure infrastructure for the IT transformation.

With AWS, the company will integrate its SAP environments with advanced analytics and machine learning technologies to create value.

Also, Gilead will use different Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instance types, in-memory databases, and other enterprise applications for its ERP workloads.

Amazon Web Services sales and marketing senior vice president Matt Garman said: “Gilead uses the proven performance of the world’s leading cloud to innovate, scale, and deliver powerful therapies for diseases like HIV and cancer, as well as advance standards for precision medicine.

“By streamlining their IT operations with AWS and taking advantage of our AWS for Health offerings, Gilead has the ability to continuously refine its approach to clinical trials, drug development, manufacturing, and distribution.

“AWS provides the security and privacy that healthcare and life sciences companies need, as well as the expertise and breadth and depth of services they can rely on to build transformative healthcare solutions that enhance health and wellbeing.”

AWS offers more than 200 fully featured services for compute, storage, databases, networking, analytics, AI, machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT), and other services.

It has 81 Availability Zones in 25 geographic regions and plans to add 27 more Availability Zones and nine new regions in Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia, Israel, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, and the UAE.
