Ascension Saint Thomas and Kindred Healthcare announced that the Tennessee State Health Services and Development Agency has granted approval for the construction and operation of a self-supporting rehabilitation hospital in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Saint Thomas Rehabilitation Hospital is established as a joint venture facility between Ascension Saint Thomas Health and Kindred Healthcare.

Ascension’s Saint Thomas Health is a faith-based health care system in Tennessee, operating nine hospitals in addition to a comprehensive network of affiliated joint ventures, medical practices, clinics and rehabilitation facilities, employing more than 8,000 associates.

Kindred Healthcare is a healthcare services company headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, provides healthcare services in 1,760 locations in 46 states with approximately 34,500 employees.

Saint Thomas Midtown and West hospitals president and CEO Fahad Tahir said: “Ascension Saint Thomas has always been committed to providing high-quality inpatient rehabilitation services designed to help patients with acute physical limitations progress toward independent living.

“This specialized collaboration with Kindred Healthcare will improve the lives of Middle Tennesseans and enhance clinical integration across the acute care and rehabilitation treatment settings.”

The new facility will replace the 24-bed Acute Rehab Unit at Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital

Saint Thomas Rehabilitation Hospital is designed to serve nine counties with a total population of 1.9 million, including more than 298,000 senior citizens.

Once completed, the 40-bed advanced facility is expected to replace the 24-bed Acute Rehab Unit at Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital, following the receipt of pending necessary regulatory approvals.

In addition, the facility would also offer additional access to post-acute care, addressing the shortage of dedicated beds for individuals who require extended neurological and cardiovascular care in the region.

Kindred Rehabilitation Services president Jason Zachariah said: “We partner with leading health systems across the country to provide intensive medical and rehabilitative care. We are excited to address the growing need for inpatient rehabilitation services and to improve the lives of Tennessee citizens through this partnership with Ascension Saint Thomas.”

The senior citizen population in the area where new facility is serving is expected to increase by 41,000 in the next four years, and the facility would play crucial role in providing continued services in Tennessee.
